ShotSpotter

Beyond, ShotSpotter, various NGOs and philanthropists have teamed up to help law enforcement and environmental protection agencies prevent crime in urban areas and poaching in the Kruger National Park.

ShotSpotter is an advanced system of sensors, algorithms and artificial intelligence to detect, locate and alert authorities to gunfire. The total time from gunshot to alert is less than 60 seconds, allowing quick deployment of resources.

Beyond is the sales, marketing, installation and support partner of ShotSpotter.

The Kruger National Park

ShotSpotter was introduced to the park in 2013. The aim of the project is to combat crime and poaching by disrupting the supply in the trade of illegal wildlife products like rhino horn and ivory.

To date, the ranger service of the Kruger National Park has successfully achieved an almost 60% reduction in the number of rhino killed within the areas where ShotSpotter has been deployed.

The aim is to implement ShotSpotter into other areas of the park soon.

How Does It Work?

Acoustic sensors are strategically placed in a coverage area. When a gun is fired, the sensors detect shots fired. Audio triangulation pinpoints the gunfire location and machine-learning algorithms analyse the sound. Likely gunshots are transmitted to an Incident Reaction Centre.

Acoustic experts at the Incident Reaction Centre analyse incidents in seconds and add relevant tactical intelligence such as “multiple shooters” and “automatic weapons”. This may change how law enforcement agencies approach a crime scene. Confirmed gunshots are published within seconds.
